This monastery began construction in 1529 in the grounds of an old castle dating hundreds of years earlier. It was finally completed in 1735 after incorporating a mixture of styles including Plateresque, Herrerian, and Churrigueresque. It housed the Order of Santiago until their expulsion in 1836 and was severely damaged during the Spanish Civil War.
