Official Site

Arecibo Observatory is a 305-metre radio telescope constructed in a sinkhole in Arecibo, Puerto Rico constructed in 1963. Until it was surpassed in 2016, the Arecibo Telescope was the largest single-aperture telescope in the world. The telescope served many purposes including major contributions to the SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) program and the detection of near-Earth objects. The main telescope collapsed in December, 2020 after two earlier cable failures causing the destruction of the observation platform and dish below.
