Official Site

The Queen Sofía National Museum of Art Centre houses a collection of 20th-century art, primarily from Spain including works from Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The building that houses the museum began its life as the first General Hospital of Madrid under King Ferdinand VI in the 18th century, designed by architects José de Hermosilla and Francisco Sabatini. The former hospital was converted to an art center after extensive renovations in 1980. The modern extension designed by architect Jean Nouvel opened in 2005 adding more exhibit space, two auditoriums, and more.
