A new stadium constructed in 2009 as a replacement for Shea Stadium which was originally situated immediately adjacent. Because Shea Stadium had not been constructed as a baseball-optimized facility, the Mets had been looking to replace their old stadium since the 1990s. The new stadium was finally pushed through as part of an unsuccessful bid to host the 2010 Olympics. The stadium has seating for 41,922 fans, a reduction of about 15,000 from Shea Stadium.
