The Tate Modern is a modern art gallery that opened in 2000 and is the second most popular museum in England just behind the British Museum, hosting over 5.8 million visitors annually. The museum was constructed in the decommissioned Bankside Power Station, a coal & oil power plant in operation from 1891 to 1981. After the plant was shut down there were several attempt to get the building listed on the historic register but they were denied. The Tate Group acquired the building in 1994 and spent around £134 million converting it into the museum.
