Piccadilly Circus was originally constructed as Regent Circus South in 1819 and received its current name in the 1880s. Starting in 1908 with a Perrier sign the intersection has been surrounded by distinctive illuminated signage giving it a distinctive Times Square feel, though now that has been reduced to a single building on the northwest corner of the circle. Originally situated in the center of the circle but moved as the roads changed, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain was constructed in 1892 to commemorate Victorian politician Lord Shaftesbury.
