Somerset house is a large neoclassical building that was designed by Sir William Chambers and constructed in 1776 in the Strand on the River Thames. For over two centuries the structure housed various learned societies and public offices including the Royal Academy, the Geological Society, the Navy Board, and the Stamp & Tax offices. In the mid 1980s the house was redeveloped into a centre for the visual arts.
